The item that stands out from its neighbors is the one we remember.

What it means

The Von Restorff effect, also called the isolation effect, is the finding that an item which is distinctive — set apart from the items around it by color, size, category, format, or sheer oddity — is more likely to be remembered than the homogeneous items surrounding it. The mechanism is distinctiveness at both encoding and retrieval: a stimulus that differs from its context captures additional attention when it is perceived and provides a more unique, less confusable cue when memory is searched, so it suffers less interference from similar neighbors. The effect depends on contrast rather than on any property of the item in isolation; the very same word or image is memorable when it stands out and forgettable when it blends in, which links it closely to salience. It interacts with the serial position effect, since distinctiveness can boost recall of items that would otherwise be lost in the middle of a sequence. It matters because it is a direct, practical lever for memorability: in design, advertising, instruction, and presentations, making the key element visually or conceptually distinctive measurably increases what audiences retain.

Examples

In a list of nouns with a single word printed in red, the red word is recalled best precisely because it breaks the pattern.

On a menu of black text, the one dish boxed and shaded is the one diners describe on the way home — and the one the kitchen sells out of.

In an hour of identical slides, the single photo of a customer's kitchen is what people quote back next week; the twenty bullet charts blur together.
