Picture superiority effect
We remember images far better than the equivalent words.
What it means
The picture superiority effect is the finding that concepts presented as pictures are remembered better than the same concepts presented as words. The leading explanation is Paivio's dual-coding theory: a picture is spontaneously encoded both as a visual representation and as a verbal label, giving it two independent routes to later retrieval, whereas a word is typically encoded only verbally and so has just one. A complementary account holds that images are more distinctive and richer in features than words, which aids both encoding and discrimination at recall. The effect is robust and sizable in free recall and recognition, though its strength depends on factors such as the type of test, the meaningfulness of the pictures, and how the items are processed. It connects to processing fluency and to distinctiveness effects like Von Restorff. It matters because it has direct implications for communication, education, and design: pairing or replacing text with clear, relevant visuals makes messages substantially more memorable, which is why diagrams and images outlast bullet points in an audience's memory.
Examples
After a presentation, audiences recall the central diagram long after the bullet points have faded from memory.
Airline safety cards use drawings, not paragraphs. Months later passengers can still picture the brace position, though not one of them could quote a line of the announcement.
Revising vocabulary with a picture of a pear beats the printed word 'pear' — the image leaves both a picture and a label in memory, while the word leaves only the label.
