What it means
The testing effect, also called retrieval practice, is the finding that actively retrieving information from memory — as in a quiz or recitation — produces more durable long-term learning than restudying the same material for an equal amount of time. The mechanism is that the effort of reconstructing a memory strengthens and reorganizes the memory trace and the cues that lead to it, a benefit that mere re-exposure does not confer; some accounts add that retrieval creates additional, elaborated retrieval routes. A crucial and counterintuitive feature is the gap between performance and learning: rereading produces a comforting feeling of fluency that learners mistake for mastery, whereas retrieval practice feels harder and is often judged less effective by students even as it produces superior retention (a metacognitive illusion). The benefit holds even when retrieval attempts are unsuccessful but followed by feedback, and it grows with spacing between tests. It is among the best-supported principles in the science of learning. It matters because it overturns the dominant study strategy of repeated reading, implying that self-quizzing, low-stakes testing, and practice retrieval should be central to teaching and study.
Examples
Self-quizzing on a chapter produces more durable learning than reading it a fourth time, even though the rereading feels easier and more effective.
Flashcard apps make you produce the foreign word before revealing it, rather than showing pairs to read over. The struggle to pull it out is what makes it stick.
Closing a training session by asking staff to write the three steps from memory does more for next month's recall than a handout they will skim once and file.
