Emotion regulation
The strategies we use to influence which emotions we feel and how.
What it means
Emotion regulation refers to the processes by which people influence which emotions they have, when they have them, and how they experience and express them. Gross's influential process model organizes these strategies by where they intervene in the unfolding of an emotion: antecedent-focused strategies act before an emotion is fully generated — situation selection, situation modification, attentional deployment, and cognitive reappraisal (reframing the meaning of a situation) — while response-focused strategies, chiefly expressive suppression, act after the emotion has arisen. The key comparative finding is that earlier, antecedent-focused strategies, especially reappraisal, tend to be more effective and carry lower physiological, cognitive, and social costs than suppression, which can dampen outward expression while leaving or even increasing inner arousal and impairing memory. A nuance is that no strategy is universally optimal: effectiveness depends on context, the type and intensity of the emotion, and flexibility in switching strategies. It matters for mental health, performance under stress, relationships, and self-control, since how people manage feelings shapes well-being and decision quality.
What the evidence actually shows
The largest test of the process model, a meta-analysis of 306 experimental comparisons by Webb, Miles and Sheeran, gives the headlines more texture than the usual slogan. Cognitive change strategies, chiefly reappraisal, do outperform other tactics, but the average effect is modest (around a third of a standard deviation), and perspective-taking reappraisals fare better than reframing your own reaction. Suppression splits apart on close inspection: clamping down on the outward expression reliably changes behaviour, while trying to suppress the felt experience of an emotion, or the thoughts that feed it, does almost nothing and can rebound. So the practical lesson is not that one strategy always wins, but that where and how you intervene, and on which part of the emotion, decides whether it works.
The cost of holding it in
Suppression is recruited late, once the emotion is already running, so it works against a system that is fully engaged. Masking the face is effortful and leaves the bodily response, sympathetic and cardiovascular activation, untouched or heightened even as the expression flattens; the monitoring load also crowds out encoding, so suppressors remember less of what happened around them. Habitual suppressors, on the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire, report lower well-being and thinner social ties. But the social penalty is not fixed. Butler, Lee and Gross found that partners rated suppressors as hostile and withdrawn mainly among people holding Western-European values; for those with more East-Asian or bicultural values, where restraint is normative, the interpersonal cost shrank. Much of suppression's damage is a mismatch with local display rules rather than a universal law.
Beyond good and bad strategies
A later wave of work, associated with Aldao, Sheppes, Bonanno and colleagues, argues that treating reappraisal as adaptive and suppression as maladaptive commits what Bonanno and Burton call the fallacy of uniform efficacy. Successful regulation is less about owning the right tool than about fit: sensitivity to context, a broad repertoire, and responsiveness to whether a strategy is working. Reappraisal shines when a situation is workable and the emotion is low to moderate; when feeling is intense or the situation is beyond your control, disengagement strategies such as distraction often do more, and people spontaneously shift toward distraction as intensity climbs. Reframing has its own trap: chronically explaining away a controllable problem can drain the motivation to act on it, so the comfortable read is not always the useful one.
How it is measured
Two traditions rarely meet. Self-report instruments, above all Gross and John's Emotion Regulation Questionnaire, ask how habitually a person reappraises or suppresses, yielding stable trait-like scores. Laboratory paradigms instead instruct people to regulate in the moment, usually while watching films or images, and read the result off physiology, coded facial expression, and later memory. The two correlate only loosely: what people say they typically do predicts momentary performance weakly, and a single questionnaire score cannot see the switching between strategies that flexibility depends on. For practitioners this is a caution against over-reading one number. Experience-sampling and ambulatory methods, which catch regulation as it unfolds across a real day, capture the context-matching that the trait measures miss, and they are where the flexibility account is now being tested.
Examples
Reframing pre-talk nerves as 'excitement' improves performance more than trying to suppress them.
Knowing an argument brews whenever politics comes up at dinner, you steer the table elsewhere before it starts — far cheaper than calming yourself down afterwards.
Keeping a straight face through a colleague's dig leaves you outwardly composed but still churning, and afterwards you can barely recall what the meeting actually decided.
A trader who mutes the live profit-and-loss ticker during a volatile session is deploying attention away from a stimulus he cannot control, curbing panic before it drives a rash sell.
