Disgust sensitivity
How easily and strongly a person is revolted varies and shapes judgment.
What it means
Disgust sensitivity is a stable individual difference in the propensity to experience disgust, an emotion rooted in avoiding contamination and disease that evolved as part of the behavioral immune system. Beyond rotten food and bodily fluids (core and pathogen disgust), it extends to sexual and moral domains, where the same revulsion attaches to certain acts and people. Higher disgust sensitivity predicts stronger moral condemnation, greater prejudice toward out-groups, more cautious health behavior, and, in some studies, more politically conservative attitudes. The emotion's recruitment into morality illustrates how a visceral, protective response can be repurposed for social judgment, sometimes producing harsh or biased verdicts. It is a key variable in research on the moral emotions and intergroup attitudes.
How it is measured
Disgust sensitivity is captured by self-report scales. The original Disgust Scale (Haidt, McCauley and Rozin, 1994) sampled seven domains of elicitors — food, animals, body products, sex, death, body-envelope violations and hygiene — and was later shortened and refined into the widely used DS-R. A competing instrument, the Three Domain Disgust Scale, separates pathogen, sexual and moral disgust, arguing these track distinct adaptive functions rather than one general trait. Which scale you use matters, because the domains correlate only modestly: a person high in pathogen disgust need not be high in sexual or moral disgust. And because the measures are self-report, they also register how willing someone is to admit revulsion, a confound that can inflate reported differences between groups.
What the evidence actually shows
Two distinct claims must be kept apart. The first is that momentary, incidental disgust — a foul smell, a filthy desk — makes unrelated moral judgments harsher. A meta-analysis of fifty experiments (Landy and Goodwin, 2015) found only a small amplification (d = 0.11) that vanished once publication bias was modelled (d = -0.01), so this effect is fragile at best. The second claim, that the stable trait predicts moral judgment, holds up better: a meta-analysis of 512 studies and over 72,000 people (Donner and colleagues, 2023) put the trait-immorality correlation at r = .23. Crucially, that link is specific rather than general — strongest when sexual disgust judges violations of sanctity or purity, and much weaker for pathogen disgust or for harm-based morality.
Disgust and political ideology
The link to conservatism is the most publicised and most contested finding. A meta-analysis (Terrizzi, Shook and McDaniel, 2013) and several large surveys report a positive but small correlation, often near r = .10 to .20, concentrated in attitudes about sexuality, immigration and group boundaries rather than economics. The direction of causation is unclear, and overlap between the wording of 'disgust' and 'moral' items may inflate it. More pointedly, an attempt to reproduce a widely cited result — that conservatives show stronger physiological disgust responses to threatening images — failed, weakening the claim that ideology is written into the body. The safer reading is a modest, domain-specific association, not a visceral basis for political belief.
Limits and where it breaks down
Several cautions follow. Disgust sensitivity is a correlate, not a verdict machine: knowing that someone is easily revolted predicts their judgments only weakly, and most of the variance lies elsewhere. The trait is also partly a product of culture and learning rather than fixed biology — what counts as contaminating varies widely across societies and eras. Treating disgust as moral evidence is where it turns harmful: because the emotion attaches to people and acts that pose no real threat, it can dress prejudice toward out-groups, the ill or the merely unfamiliar in the language of moral truth. Recognising that a wave of revulsion is data about your own body, not about another person's wrongdoing, is the practical corrective.
Examples
People primed to feel disgust, or who are simply more disgust-prone, judge unrelated moral violations more harshly.
The more easily revolted a commuter is, the further they edge from anyone coughing on the bus and the more diligently they wash afterwards — the behavioural immune system at work.
Second-hand clothes sell at a steep discount partly because a garment worn by a stranger feels contaminated to disgust-prone buyers, even laundered, unmarked and indistinguishable from new.
In a criminal trial, graphic autopsy photographs can push more disgust-prone jurors toward harsher verdicts, a reason defence lawyers move to exclude gratuitously gory exhibits that add little probative value.
A hand-washing campaign showing germs spreading from a doorknob persuades the already squeamish, yet can leave the least disgust-prone unmoved.
