Distraction

Steering attention away from a feeling to turn down its volume.
What it means
As a form of attentional deployment it can help blunt intense or overwhelming emotions in the short term, though its average effect is modest and depends heavily on directing attention away from (not toward) the feeling. People tend to choose distraction for high-intensity stimuli and reappraisal for low-intensity ones, and this flexibility is associated with better adjustment - but the intensity rule is emotion-specific rather than universal.
How it works
Attention is the gateway to emotion. Because feelings need cognitive resources to build, occupying those resources with something else starves the emotion before it gathers force. This is why distraction is an early-selection strategy in Gross's process model: it acts at the deployment-of-attention stage, upstream of the meaning-making that reappraisal targets. Neuroimaging fits the picture, with distraction dampening amygdala activity and recruiting prefrontal and parietal regions that support working memory, competing with the stimulus for the same limited bandwidth. Electrophysiology sharpens the timing. The late positive potential, an EEG marker of sustained attention to emotional content, drops earlier under distraction than under reappraisal, which has to interpret the stimulus first. The block is fast, cheap, and largely automatic once engaged.
What the evidence shows
The signature finding is about choice, not just effect. Given free rein, people reach for distraction when emotions run high and reappraisal when they run low, a pattern Sheppes and colleagues demonstrated with negative images and painful shocks, and one that has replicated across labs. But effectiveness is more contested. Webb, Miles and Sheeran's large meta-analysis found attentional deployment, taken as a category, had essentially no average effect on emotion, because it pools genuinely helpful distraction with attention turned toward the feeling itself, which resembles rumination and makes things worse. The direction of attention, not merely its redeployment, decides the outcome. Newer work adds that the intensity rule is emotion-specific: the intensity rule holds for disgust but breaks for fear, where people prefer reappraisal regardless of intensity, so no single matching rule fits every feeling.
What distraction leaves behind
Speed has a price. Because distraction never touches what the situation means, the stimulus keeps its emotional charge intact, ready to return the moment attention drifts back. Studies that re-expose people to previously regulated images capture this directly: pictures with a distraction history later provoke a larger late positive potential than those that were reappraised, as if the feeling was parked rather than defused. Reappraisal, by rewriting meaning, tends to leave more durable change. Scaled up and made habitual, the same avoidance that soothes a single moment can block the learning that would let a fear extinguish or a problem get solved, the mechanism that links chronic distraction and experiential avoidance to anxiety and depression. Distraction buys time; it does not, on its own, resolve anything.
Using it in practice
Treat distraction as triage, not treatment. When arousal is too high to think clearly, a genuinely absorbing task, one that demands working memory rather than idle scrolling, can pull intensity down to a level where reappraisal or problem-solving becomes possible. The sequence matters more than the label: blunt first, then engage. The strongest predictor of good adjustment is not loyalty to any one strategy but flexibility, reading the situation and switching as intensity, controllability and emotion type change. Distraction earns its place for the uncontrollable and the acute: a medical procedure, a turbulent flight, the minutes before a performance. It earns suspicion when it becomes the default for problems that a change of mind, or a change of the situation itself, could actually fix.
Examples
Absorbing yourself in a puzzle to get through the wait for biopsy results turns down the dread without resolving it.
A parent hands a howling toddler a toy at the moment the needle goes in. Attention moves, the crying stops, and nothing about needles has been reconsidered.
After a brutal review meeting a manager buries herself in a spreadsheet all afternoon. It works until the drive home, when the meeting is waiting, entirely unchanged.
A sprinter on the blocks counts her breathing pattern instead of scanning the crowd, dialing arousal down enough to start clean, though nothing about the pressure itself has changed.
Watching a plunging portfolio, an investor closes the app and goes to mow the lawn. The panic that might have triggered a fire-sale fades, buying time for a cooler decision later.
