Temporal discounting and the brain

How neural systems weigh immediate rewards against delayed ones.
What it means
This is the study of the brain mechanisms behind intertemporal choice — how we trade off smaller-sooner against larger-later rewards. An influential dual-system finding reported that limbic and paralimbic reward areas (ventral striatum, medial prefrontal and orbitofrontal cortex) respond preferentially when an immediate reward is available, while lateral prefrontal and parietal control regions are engaged regardless of timing and more so when people choose patiently. On this view, the steepness of discounting — and present bias — reflects the relative weighting of these systems, though a competing single-valuation account holds that one region represents discounted value for all delays. Individual differences in discounting rate predict impulsivity, addiction, obesity, and savings behavior, and correlate with the structure and function of these circuits. It matters because it gives a neural account of self-control failure and a target for understanding why the future is so easily underweighted.
