Prefrontal cortex

The brain's control center for planning, self-control, and deliberate choice.
What it means
The prefrontal cortex is the most anterior region of the frontal lobes and the principal neural substrate of executive function — the set of top-down control processes including working memory, planning, inhibition, attention switching, and goal maintenance. Distinct subregions specialize: the dorsolateral PFC supports working memory and reasoning, the ventromedial PFC and orbitofrontal cortex represent value and integrate emotion into choice, and the anterior cingulate monitors conflict and errors. The PFC matures late, into the mid-twenties, which helps explain adolescent impulsivity, and its activity can be overridden by strong subcortical emotional and reward signals under stress or temptation. Damage to it impairs judgment, self-control, and decision-making even when other faculties are intact. It matters because the PFC is the biological seat of the slow, deliberate 'System 2' processes that restrain impulses and enable far-sighted choice.
Examples
Resisting dessert to keep a diet, or holding several figures in mind while planning a budget, depends on prefrontal executive control.
A teenager can recite every road rule and still speed with friends in the car; the control system that would veto the impulse is the last part of the brain to mature.
After a broken night's sleep you snap at a colleague and buy the pastry you'd sworn off — fatigue blunts exactly the top-down control that normally keeps both in check.
