Reconstructive memory
Remembering is rebuilding the past from fragments, not replaying a recording.
What it means
Memory retrieval is an active reconstruction in which fragmentary stored details are reassembled and filled in using schemas, expectations, and current knowledge, rather than a faithful playback of a stored copy. Because the gaps are patched with plausible inference, recollections systematically drift toward what 'should' have happened, importing details that were never present. Bartlett's early work showed that recall of an unfamiliar story became progressively distorted toward the rememberer's cultural expectations across retellings. This reconstructive nature is what makes memory vulnerable to suggestion, misinformation, and confident error. It is the theoretical backbone for why eyewitness testimony, however sincere, can be unreliable.
Examples
Recalling a doctor's office, people often 'remember' books on the shelves because clinics usually have them — even when none were there.
Witnesses asked how fast the cars were going when they 'smashed' give higher speeds than those asked when they 'hit,' and later recall broken glass the film never showed.
Two siblings each 'remember' being the one who found the lost dog on holiday, having quietly rebuilt the scene from a family story retold a hundred times.
