Cue

The trigger that automatically launches a habit, like a starting gun for behavior.
What it means
A cue is the stimulus or context that initiates a habitual behavior, the first element in the habit loop of cue, routine, and reward. Through repeated pairing in a stable setting, a behavior becomes associated with the recurring features that preceded it—a time of day, a place, an emotional state, the presence of certain people, or a just-completed action—so that encountering the cue automatically activates the behavioral routine with little conscious intention. This is what makes habits efficient and durable but also hard to break: once the cue-behavior link is well learned, the cue itself, not the goal or reward, drives the action, which is why people perform habits even when the reward has faded. The practical levers follow directly: to build a habit, attach it to a reliable existing cue; to break one, remove or avoid the cue, or deliberately substitute a new routine in response to the same cue. It matters because changing behavior is often less about willpower than about engineering the cues that surround it.
The associative mechanism
Repeated co-occurrence of a context and a response builds a direct associative link, so perceiving the context retrieves the response without routing through a goal or an expected reward. Neuroscience locates this shift in the dorsolateral striatum: as behavior automates, control migrates from goal-tracking prefrontal and ventral-striatal circuits toward stimulus-response systems that fire on the cue itself. The link is often unconscious. Diary work by Wood, Quinn and Kashy found that during habitual behavior people's thoughts wander to unrelated matters, evidence that the cue, not deliberate attention, is steering. Crucially, the triggers that actually control a habit tend to be stable external features, a location, a time, a preceding action, more than the internal states people believe are driving them.
What the evidence shows
Because habits are cue-driven, they form only through repetition in a consistent context, and they persist only while that context holds. Lally and colleagues tracked 96 people adopting a daily behavior in a fixed setting and found automaticity built gradually, plateauing after a median of 66 days, with an individual range of 18 to 254, not the folk figure of 21. The context dependence is equally clear. Wood, Tam and Guerrero Witt followed students transferring universities and found long-standing exercise, reading and television habits survived the move only when the setting stayed the same; when the cues changed, behavior fell back under conscious intention. In a cinema study, habitual eaters ate as much stale popcorn as fresh, but only in the theatre and only when eating in their usual, automatic way.
Cue reactivity and craving
Cues do more than start a routine; they can generate the urge that precedes it. In addiction research, exposing dependent users to drug-related stimuli, the sight of a lighter or a familiar bar, reliably provokes craving and bodily arousal even when the person intends to abstain. Carter and Tiffany's meta-analysis of 41 studies put the average craving response to such cues at a large effect near 0.9, alongside smaller but consistent physiological shifts in heart rate and sweating. This is why relapse so often tracks place and company rather than resolve: the environment that trained the habit keeps firing it. It also explains why stimulus-control approaches target the trigger, removing lighters, changing the route home, rather than pitting willpower against a cue that still fires.
Using it in practice
Two windows make cues actionable. The first is context change: because a habit weakens when its cue disappears, naturally disrupted moments, moving house, changing jobs, a new baby, are unusually effective times to install or drop behaviors, an idea known as the habit-discontinuity hypothesis. The second is precision: implementation intentions such as "when I sit down at my desk, I will open the document first" work partly by naming an exact, encounterable cue and pre-linking it to the response, so the situation rather than a fresh decision launches the action. Both levers respect a limit worth stating plainly: cue control is probabilistic, not deterministic. A strong cue raises the odds of a routine; it does not compel it, and internal cues like stress or boredom are harder to see, avoid, or redesign than a doorway or a phone.
Examples
Hearing a phone notification (cue) automatically prompts the routine of checking it; people who hid the phone removed the cue and checked far less.
Someone who quits smoking copes fine at work but relapses at the pub — the pint, the doorway and the same friends are the cues that still fire the old routine.
A commuter who always bought a pastry passing one bakery drops the habit simply by walking home along a different street; without its trigger, the routine never activates.
Laying out running clothes the night before turns the morning alarm into the cue for a jog; without that visible prompt, the intention competes with the pull of staying in bed.
Tying a monthly budget review to a fixed calendar date rather than to feeling organized gives the task a reliable cue; anchored to the first of the month, it stops being quietly skipped.
