Contrast effect
A thing seems better or worse depending on what it's set against.
What it means
The enhancement or diminishment of a perception or judgment when a stimulus is evaluated in relation to a recently encountered or simultaneously present comparison, pushing the judgment away from the reference. Because the mind judges relatively rather than on an absolute scale, the same option looks more attractive after an inferior one and less attractive after a superior one, and the same magnitude feels larger or smaller depending on its neighbors. The effect spans perception (a lukewarm bowl feels hot to a cold hand), social judgment (an average candidate shines after a weak one), and pricing (a mid-tier product looks cheap beside a premium anchor). It is the perceptual cousin of anchoring and a driver of the decoy and compromise effects, and it matters because sequence and context — which are often manipulable — silently reshape evaluations that feel like properties of the thing itself.
Why the mind judges relatively
The nervous system is built to register change, not absolutes. A channel that fired steadily at a constant input would waste capacity, so neurons adapt to the prevailing level and respond to departures from it, which is why a room's temperature fades from notice until a draft arrives. Judgment inherits this architecture. The mind sets an implicit reference, an adaptation level assembled from recent and surrounding stimuli, and reads each new item as its distance from that benchmark rather than as a fixed quantity. A salary, a face, a price, a candidate's answer all get scored against whatever the comparison set has established. Because the reference is built on the fly from context, the same object lands at a different point on the scale depending on what the mind was just holding.
What the evidence shows
Contrast effects turn up in high-stakes field data, not only lab tasks. In speed-dating records, men were less likely to say yes to a partner when the preceding partner was more attractive, an error confined to the immediately prior date rather than the whole evening (Bhargava and Fisman, 2014). Across quasi-random admission and hiring interviews, a stronger previous candidate lowered the current one's assessment, producing negative autocorrelation in evaluators' votes of up to 40 percent and shifting who was admitted (Radbruch and Schiprowski, 2025). Even equity markets show it: investors treat today's earnings surprise as less impressive after a good one yesterday and more impressive after a bad one, mispricing stocks for days (Hartzmark and Shue, 2018). The direction and recency of these effects rule out learning or quotas as the cause.
Assimilation, the mirror outcome
Contrast is not automatic. Sherif, Taub, and Hovland (1958), having people judge weights against planted anchors, found that a reference only pushes judgment away when it sits well outside the range being judged; an anchor near or inside that range pulls judgment toward it, an assimilation effect. The same structure holds for opinions and prices: a moderately better comparison can make a target look good by association, while an extreme one makes it look worse by contrast. Which way the effect runs depends on distance, similarity, and whether the items are framed as belonging together. This is why adding a slightly better option and adding an absurdly expensive one can move choices in opposite directions, and why anyone who assumes contrast will always flatter the target sometimes gets the reverse.
Reducing it in practice
Because the distortion operates below awareness, telling evaluators about it does little; the interview studies found warned raters contrasted about as much as unwarned ones (Radbruch and Schiprowski, 2025). What helps is structural. Anchoring each judgment to an absolute rubric, with defined descriptors for every score, gives the mind a fixed reference to lean on instead of the previous item. Spacing similar cases apart, or reordering so observably similar candidates do not sit adjacent, blunts the sequential version. Evaluating options one at a time, in isolation, removes the side-by-side comparison that pricing menus exploit. None of these erase the effect, but they convert an invisible, order-dependent bias into something bounded and auditable, which for hiring, grading, and lending is usually the practical goal.
Examples
An interviewer rates an average applicant more highly when the previous candidate was poor, and more harshly when the previous candidate was outstanding.
An agent shows the cramped, overpriced flat first. The ordinary one seen twenty minutes later feels like a find, though nothing about it has changed but the order.
A 900-pound pair of headphones on the shelf makes the 250-pound pair beside them look sensible; put that same 250-pound pair next to a 60-pound set and it looks like an indulgence.
After an hour swiping through heavily filtered dating profiles, a coworker you found appealing last week now registers as merely ordinary; the queue has quietly reset what your eye treats as normal.
A figure-skating judge scores a clean but unremarkable routine lower when it directly follows a spectacular one, and higher when it follows a fall, marking the same skate against its neighbor.
