Basic anchoring effect

An irrelevant number you weren't even comparing can still bias your estimate.

What it means

A form of anchoring in which a number that is wholly incidental — never offered as a candidate answer and not the subject of any comparison — is claimed to shift a subsequent, unrelated numerical judgment toward itself. Whereas classic anchoring asks people to compare a target to the anchor before estimating, the basic version holds that mere exposure suffices, implicating low-level mechanisms such as numeric priming and heightened accessibility of anchor-consistent values. First reported by Wilson and colleagues in 1996, it is far weaker and less stable than standard anchoring: close replications eliminate it after trivial procedural changes, and its most vivid extension — incidental environmental anchors, like a restaurant named Studio 97 — has largely failed to replicate, with pooled effects near zero once publication bias is corrected. Whether a genuine basic anchoring effect exists at all remains unsettled.

The original demonstration

Wilson and colleagues (1996) engineered the effect to strip out comparison. Across five studies, participants first attended to an arbitrary, uninformative number — copying it, or judging it — and then estimated an unrelated quantity, in the best-known task the number of physicians and surgeons listed in the local phone book. Estimates drifted toward the number people had just handled, even though nobody invited them to treat it as a candidate answer. Two moderators mattered. The bias surfaced only when participants attended closely to the anchor, and people who knew the domain well were largely immune. From this the authors argued that anchoring is not always deliberate under-adjustment: an active quantity can simply raise the accessibility of nearby values and tilt the next judgment automatically.

Why the effect keeps vanishing

The follow-up record is unforgiving. Brewer and Chapman (2002), across three studies (Ns of 881, 205 and 117), reproduced basic anchoring only under Wilson's exact procedure; trivial changes — reordering the anchor numbers, or swapping in different ones — made it disappear, which is not how a robust bias behaves. A flashier extension, Critcher and Gilovich's (2008) incidental environmental anchors (a football player's jersey number, a restaurant named Studio 17 versus Studio 97), fared no better under scrutiny: the Many Labs 2 project (Klein et al., 2018) failed to replicate it at scale, and Shanks and colleagues' (2020) near-exact replications found nothing. Once publication bias is modeled, the pooled incidental-anchoring effect sits close to zero.

Not the same as standard anchoring

Basic anchoring is easy to confuse with the anchoring effect that does survive replication, and the distinction is the whole point. Standard anchoring — where people are explicitly asked whether a target is higher or lower than some number before estimating it — is among the more reliable findings in judgment research, with sizeable effects that persist across dozens of samples. The comparison step appears to be load-bearing: it recruits a selective search for information consistent with the anchor. Strip the comparison away, as basic anchoring does, and you remove much of the machinery that makes the standard effect work. What remains is a fragile residue that may reflect ordinary numeric priming, and that frequently fails to appear at all.

What to make of it in practice

For practitioners the honest lesson is a negative one. The recurring worry that stray numbers — an ID code, a passing price, a street address — silently corrupt unrelated estimates is not well supported; when tested cleanly, the contamination mostly does not materialize. Attention is better spent on the anchor that genuinely moves judgments: a number deliberately presented as relevant to the decision, such as a list price, a suggested donation amount, or a first offer in a negotiation. If you are auditing your own process for hidden numeric influence, focus on the figures a judge actually engaged with as possible answers, not on every number that happened to be in view.

Examples

Writing down the last digits of your own phone number can nudge a later, unrelated numeric estimate up or down toward that figure.

The waiting room television shows a share price of 847 just before a doctor asks how many days your symptoms have lasted; the stray figure can nudge your answer upward without you noticing.

A house's asking price is still sitting in your head when you value a completely different flat that afternoon; you never compared the two, yet the first figure quietly tugs the second.

A warehouse worker copies a pallet's ID number, 6200, onto a form, then is asked to guess how many boxes an unmarked pallet nearby holds; the stray 6,200 is supposed to inflate the estimate.

Reading the four-digit code on a raffle ticket just before guessing how many people will attend a fundraiser could, on the basic-anchoring account, pull the headcount estimate toward that number.
