The Ego Economy: The Impact of Social Media on Self-Esteem

A feed becomes a mirror that only shows certain angles. Self-esteem isn't something we have anymore; it's something we earn, spend, and lose in public, in real time. Wrote about what the research actually says

Every social platform runs on the same currency: attention. But attention doesn't stay outside us—it gets converted, quietly, into something more personal. A like becomes evidence. A follower count becomes a scoreboard. A feed becomes a mirror that only shows certain angles.

Call it the ego economy: a system in which self-esteem is no longer something we simply have but something we earn, spend, and lose in public, in real time, based on how our lives compare to everyone else's highlight reel.

The psychological mechanism behind this is not new. In 1954, Leon Festinger proposed that people evaluate themselves largely by comparing themselves to others, especially when no objective standard exists. What social media did was not invent this instinct—it industrialized it, making comparison available continuously to strangers as well as peers through images curated for maximum favorability.

The Comparison Machine

The clearest empirical picture comes from Vogel and colleagues' research on Facebook use and self-esteem. Across a set of studies, people who used Facebook more frequently tended to report lower trait self-esteem, and this relationship was explained in part by greater exposure to upward social comparisons — comparing oneself to people perceived as better off (Vogel et al., 2014). In one experiment, the researchers had participants view fictitious Facebook profiles constructed to represent either an upward comparison target (someone who appeared more successful or put-together) or a downward comparison target (someone who appeared less so). Participants who viewed the upward-comparison profile reported lower state self-esteem afterward than those who viewed the downward-comparison profile.

This is a modest effect rather than a dramatic one. But it points to a mechanism, not just a mood: the platform doesn't need to say anything negative about you. It only needs to keep showing you people who appear to be doing better.

The Currency of Likes

Comparison explains part of the picture. The other part is reward.

In an fMRI study of adolescents, Sherman and colleagues found that viewing photos with a high number of likes was associated with greater activity in brain regions linked to reward processing and social cognition than the same photos with few likes (Sherman et al., 2016). Participants were also more likely to "like" popular content themselves. It's worth being precise about what this shows: increased activity in reward-related regions is a neural correlate, not direct proof that participants consciously experienced or reported the images as more rewarding. But taken together with the behavioral finding, it suggests the visible approval of others may shape how content is processed, independent of the image's actual substance.

Likes, in other words, are not just a passive tally of approval—visible approval itself can alter how content is processed. That distinction matters: a self-esteem system that depends partly on external counts is a self-esteem system with a meter that other people and platform design choices can turn up or down.

The Influencer Effect—and a Complication

It would be convenient if the research showed a simple, one-directional story: more exposure to idealized content, less self-esteem. The evidence is messier than that.

A 2023 experimental study exposed women to positivity-biased images of social media influencers and measured immediate effects on state self-esteem (Rüther et al., 2023). As expected, exposure increased upward social comparison, which in turn predicted lower self-esteem on certain dimensions. But the study found no significant total effect of influencer exposure on overall self-esteem—the negative pathway through social comparison appears to have been offset by other, more favorable pathways, such as people assimilating the image and feeling some reflected inspiration rather than pure inadequacy. Individual resilience, which the researchers expected to soften the negative effects, did not significantly moderate the outcome either way.

The honest summary is that the direction of the effect depends on whether a given comparison reads as "they're better than me" (which tends to lower self-esteem) or "people like me can be that" (which sometimes doesn't). Broader meta-analytic reviews of social media and self-esteem have similarly described the overall association as small and inconsistent across studies, rather than large and uniform.

Active Use, Passive Use, and the Limits of the Data

A separate line of research distinguishes active use—posting, messaging, commenting—from passive use—scrolling, browsing, viewing without engaging. The general theory is that active use tends to build social connection, while passive use is more associated with comparison and lower well-being (Verduyn et al., 2017).

It's a useful distinction, but worth holding loosely. A recent meta-analysis pooling 141 studies and roughly 145,000 participants found that most of the measured associations between active or passive use and mental health outcomes were negligible in size, with only a handful of stronger correlations — notably between active use and a greater sense of online support (Godard & Holtzman, 2024). The active-passive framework is a helpful starting point, in other words, but it is not a clean predictive rule, and claims that frame either mode of use as straightforwardly "safe" or "harmful" overstate what the pooled evidence actually shows.

Rebalancing the Ledger

If comparison is the mechanism, the more useful question is not "how do we eliminate it" but "can the same platforms be used in ways that don't tax self-esteem so heavily."

Early evidence offers a cautious yes. A small pilot study taught 55 college students "social savoring"—deliberately feeling glad for someone else's good news rather than measuring themselves against it—over a two-week trial (Andrade et al., 2023). Students in the intervention group reported higher performance-related self-esteem by the end of the trial than those in the control group. Social comparison itself, however, declined in both groups over the same period, so that reduction cannot be attributed specifically to the savoring exercise. Given the small sample and the mixed pattern of results, the findings are best read as preliminary—suggestive of a promising direction rather than a proven intervention.

Separately, researchers studying Instagram and Facebook use found that more frequent users reported making less extreme upward comparisons than occasional users (Le Blanc-Brillon et al., 2025). The study did not test why directly; the researchers proposed possible explanations—including feed curation, unfollowing accounts that trigger negative comparison, and habituation to previously novel content—as plausible mechanisms rather than confirmed ones.

Neither finding suggests social media can be made comparison-free, and neither should be overstated. But together they suggest the relationship between usage and self-esteem may be more negotiable than a simple "scrolling equals suffering" framing implies.

Agency, Design, and the Feed

None of this means platforms are neutral or that people are simply free agents shaping their own experience at will. Both things are true at once: design choices—visible like counts, follower tallies, and algorithmically surfaced comparison targets—make approval quantifiable and constantly updated, turning a social interaction into something closer to a running score. At the same time, the studies above suggest people are not wholly passive within that system; how a feed is curated and what kind of comparisons it ends up serving aren't fixed.

That combination is really the whole argument: social media doesn't uniformly damage self-esteem, and it isn't uniformly harmless either. The direction depends on the content, the comparison it invites, and — to a real but still limited degree — the choices available to the person scrolling.

Closing

Self-esteem was never meant to be a public ledger, updated in real time by strangers. Social media didn't create the instinct to compare ourselves to others—Festinger described that instinct seventy years before Instagram existed. What it did was give the instinct continuous fuel and a visible scoreboard.

The task isn't to opt out of comparison entirely; that isn't realistic, and the evidence doesn't support treating all use as uniformly harmful. It's to notice when a feed has quietly become a mirror only showing one angle — and to remember that a number generated by an algorithm was never a reliable measure of anyone's worth.
