Somatic marker hypothesis
Bodily 'gut feelings' tag options with value and are necessary for good decisions.
What it means
The somatic marker hypothesis is Damasio's theory that emotional processes — bodily signals, or 'somatic markers,' associated with the past consequences of similar choices — guide decision-making by rapidly biasing us toward or away from options before, and alongside, deliberate reasoning. The proposed mechanism is that when we face a choice, the brain reactivates the bodily-emotional state linked to comparable past outcomes (literally or via an 'as-if' loop in the brain), and this marker functions as a fast value signal that narrows the options worth considering and flags danger. The striking claim is that emotion is not the enemy of rationality but a precondition for it: people with damage to emotion-integrating regions such as the ventromedial prefrontal cortex can reason and score normally on intelligence tests yet make disastrous real-life decisions, lacking the warning 'gut feeling.' The supporting evidence, including the Iowa Gambling Task, has been influential but also contested on methodological and interpretive grounds. It connects to the affect heuristic and to dual-process accounts of intuition. It matters because it overturns the old picture of cool reason as ideal, showing that feeling is woven into competent judgment.
Examples
Patients with certain prefrontal damage reason fine in the abstract but make ruinous real-life choices, lacking the cautionary 'gut feeling' that flags a bad option.
An investor reads a contract that ticks every box, feels an unease they cannot name, and walks away; the body is flagging a pattern from a deal that once went bad.
