Portion-size effect

Give people a bigger serving and they eat more, almost without noticing.
What it means
The portion-size effect is the robust finding that people consume more food or drink when served a larger portion, package, or container, largely independent of hunger and often without awareness that the amount offered has changed. The dominant mechanism is that the served amount acts as a consumption norm or default — people take the unit they are given as the appropriate quantity to finish — compounded by poor internal monitoring of satiety and by visual cues that make a given amount look smaller in a bigger vessel. Crucially, larger portions do not lead people to compensate by eating less later, so the extra intake accumulates. The effect is closely tied to unit bias, the tendency to treat a single serving as the right amount to eat. It matters for the obesity epidemic and for choice-architecture interventions, since simply reducing default portions, plate sizes, and package sizes lowers consumption without requiring willpower.
Examples
Moviegoers given a larger bucket of stale popcorn ate substantially more than those given a smaller bucket, even though they disliked the taste — the container size, not appetite, drove intake.
Pour the same measure into a short wide tumbler and a tall narrow one, and people top up the wide glass more — then count both as one drink.
A parent serves a double helping of pasta, watches it vanish, and concludes the child was starving — the serving created the appetite rather than answering it.
