Mortality salience

Being reminded that you will die changes what you value and defend.
What it means
Mortality salience is the state of having one's own death brought to mind, and the experimental manipulation used to induce it — usually two open-ended questions about dying, or an interview conducted in front of a funeral home. The mechanism is dual-process: proximal defenses immediately push the thought out of awareness through denial or distraction, and once it leaves focal attention but stays accessible, distal defenses take over, so people bolster self-esteem and defend the cultural worldview that promises meaning outlasting death. It is the engine of terror management research, invoked to explain punitive sentencing, rallying behind leaders after attacks, materialism, and risk-taking. Its main limit is empirical: large multi-lab replication attempts have failed to reproduce the classic effect, so the size and reliability of these effects are contested. It matters because death reminders are routine in insurance, health, and security messaging, where they can backfire.
Examples
Municipal judges who first filled out a brief questionnaire about their own death set markedly higher bail for an alleged prostitute than judges given a neutral questionnaire.
Graphic cigarette warnings showing a corpse can backfire on smokers whose self-esteem is tied to smoking, prompting more defensive attachment to the habit rather than less.
After a widely covered terror attack, support for decisive leaders and familiar national symbols tends to climb — a pattern terror management researchers read as death reminders driving worldview defense.
