The deeper the meaning you extract, the better you remember.
What it means
Memory durability depends not on how long material is held or how often it is repeated but on the depth at which it is processed, with semantic (meaning-based) processing yielding far stronger retention than shallow structural or phonological processing. The framework challenged the rigid multi-store model by treating memory strength as a byproduct of the kind of analysis performed at encoding. Critics noted that 'depth' was defined partly by its memory outcome, risking circularity, and that the effect interacts with how the eventual test is structured. The complementary idea of transfer-appropriate processing shows that 'deep' is not universally best — what matters is whether encoding matches the demands of retrieval. Despite these refinements, the core insight that elaborative, meaningful engagement beats rote repetition remains a cornerstone of the learning sciences.
Examples
Judging whether a word fits a sentence (meaning) produces far better recall than counting its letters (structure).
Students who explain in their own words why a formula works still recall it months later; those who reread and highlighted the same page recognise it but cannot use it.
