Extraversion
The trait of sociability, assertiveness, energy, and reward sensitivity.
What it means
Extraversion is the Big Five dimension capturing the tendency toward sociability, assertiveness, talkativeness, positive emotionality, and active engagement with the external world. High scorers (extraverts) seek stimulation and social contact and report more frequent positive affect; low scorers (introverts) are more reserved, reflective, and content with solitude. A leading biological account ties extraversion to heightened sensitivity of brain reward systems, so extraverts pursue social and other rewards more vigorously. It is one of the more visible traits and predicts leadership emergence, network size, and subjective well-being. Crucially, introversion is not shyness or social anxiety — it reflects lower reward-seeking and stimulation needs, not fear of others.
How it works
Two rival biological accounts compete to explain the trait. Eysenck's older arousal theory held that introverts carry chronically higher cortical arousal, so they retreat from stimulation to stay near an optimum while extraverts seek it out. EEG and imaging tests of that prediction have been inconsistent, and it is no longer the dominant view. The account that has held up better is Depue and Collins's reward-sensitivity model: extraversion tracks the responsiveness of dopamine-linked incentive circuitry, so a potential reward, especially a social one, produces a stronger pull toward approach and a bigger hit of positive feeling. On this reading the defining core of the trait is not sociability itself but sensitivity to reward; sociability follows because other people are among the richest rewards available.
What the evidence shows
Extraversion is among the most reliably predictive traits in applied psychology. In Judge and colleagues' 2002 meta-analysis it correlated .31 with leadership across emergence and effectiveness, the strongest single Big Five predictor. Anglim and colleagues' 2020 meta-analysis, pooling more than 330,000 participants, confirmed extraversion as one of the two largest personality correlates of positive affect and life satisfaction, rivalled only by low neuroticism. Experiments tighten the causal story rather than just the correlational one: when Fleeson and colleagues had people act talkative and assertive during a fixed task, they reported more positive affect regardless of their standing trait level. That points to the behaviour, not only the disposition, as a driver of the mood boost, which is what makes the trait interesting to intervene on.
The limits of 'act more extraverted'
The finding that acting extraverted lifts mood inspired a tempting prescription: introverts should simply do more of it. A 2019 randomized controlled trial by Jacques-Hamilton and colleagues complicated that. Averaged across everyone, a week of assigned extraverted behaviour raised positive affect and felt authentic. But the benefit shrank the more introverted a person was, and strong introverts showed the opposite pattern: more tiredness, more negative affect, and less felt authenticity. Enacting a trait that does not fit you carries a regulatory cost. Leadership research adds a parallel caution. Extraversion predicts who emerges as leader far better than who performs well once there, so the same visibility that wins the role does not guarantee competence in it.
Related but distinct
Extraversion is routinely confused with its neighbours. It is not shyness or social anxiety, which are about fear of judgement; a calm, sociable-when-asked person can score low simply because company is not especially rewarding to them. The trait is also not unitary. Researchers separate an agentic side, assertiveness, dominance and drive, from an affiliative side, warmth, gregariousness and positive emotion, and these facets can diverge, so two people with the same overall score may have reached it for opposite reasons. Much of extraversion's link to leadership runs through the agentic facet, while much of its link to everyday happiness runs through the affiliative and positive-emotion side, which is why a single number can hide what actually drives a given person.
Examples
At a conference, the extravert works the room and feels energized; the introvert has a few deep conversations and needs quiet afterward to recharge.
A hiring panel keeps calling the talkative candidate a natural leader. Extraversion predicts who emerges as leader far more reliably than who turns out to be good at the job.
Someone skips Friday drinks not from fear of the room but because an evening with a book is genuinely the better offer. Introversion is about stimulation, not anxiety.
A gym promotes group classes with upbeat crowds and public leaderboards; the same social buzz that pulls extraverts in reads as pressure to the introverts it hoped to retain.
A teacher reads the quiet pupil as disengaged and the one who blurts answers as the star. Talkativeness signals extraversion, not understanding, and quietly rewarding it penalizes reflective learners.
