Excitation transfer
Arousal left over from one event spills over to intensify the next.
What it means
Excitation transfer theory holds that physiological arousal dissipates more slowly than people consciously recognize, so residual arousal from a prior event can be misattributed to and intensify the emotional response to a subsequent, unrelated event. Because the leftover activation is no longer tied to its original cause, it is interpreted in light of whatever is happening now, magnifying anger, attraction, or excitement. The effect requires a window in which the person is still aroused but believes the first source has passed, which is when misattribution is most likely. It builds directly on the two-factor view that arousal is general and labeling is contextual. The theory has been applied to media violence, exercise, and the heightening of romantic attraction.
The three conditions
Excitation transfer needs three things to line up. First, residual arousal must still be present: sympathetic activation from the first event decays over minutes, not seconds, so a measurable charge outlasts the situation that produced it. Second, the person must have lost track of that source; if they still credit the treadmill for their pounding heart, there is nothing to misattribute. Third, the new stimulus must itself be arousing, but not so overwhelming that its own activation swamps the leftover residue. The effect therefore lives in a narrow middle window: aroused enough to carry a charge, unaware enough to misplace it. Outside that window the transfer collapses, which is why the theory makes sharp, testable predictions about timing rather than vague ones about mood.
The foundational experiments
Zillmann built the case through a signature three-phase design. Participants exercised, then met a provoking or erotic stimulus at one of three points in recovery. In the first phase they knew they were still winded; in the third, arousal had fully decayed; only in the middle phase, with bodily residue high but consciously attributed to nothing, did the leftover excitation amplify the later response. Cantor, Zillmann, and Bryant (1975) found erotic films rated most arousing and most enjoyable precisely in that middle window. Earlier, Zillmann and Bryant (1974) showed residual excitation intensifying provoked aggression, and the original 1971 study demonstrated the same for communication-induced anger. The pattern is not simply more arousal, more emotion, but a curved, timing-dependent one a plain carryover account would not predict.
Where it shows up
Beyond aggression, the framework has been stretched across media and persuasion. Tannenbaum and Zillmann argued that arousal from suspenseful or explicit content spills into whatever message follows, a claim media researchers still invoke for advertising placed after gripping programming. The most famous cousin is romantic: Dutton and Aron's (1974) bridge study found men crossing a fear-inducing footbridge more drawn to a woman they met there, their fright re-read as attraction. Sports, exercise, video games, and horror have all served as the arousing first event. The through-line is that the residue is emotionally blank; it carries intensity but no direction, so context supplies the label, and the same physiological charge can end as anger, desire, or delight depending on what happens next.
Limits and caveats
The evidence base is older than the reforms that reshaped social psychology, and it shows. Reisenzein's (1983) review of the underlying two-factor tradition concluded that of Schachter's core claims only one held up, that misattributed arousal can intensify an existing emotion, while the stronger claims about arousal creating or being necessary for emotion did not. The classic studies used small samples, heavy deception, and weak manipulation checks, and no large preregistered replication of Zillmann's experiments exists. Boundary conditions bite too: transfer tends to fail when the two events are obviously connected, because an available explanation blocks misattribution. Read excitation transfer as a real but narrow effect, well specified in its timing, modest in size, and easy to abolish by making the true source of arousal salient.
Examples
After an intense workout, a minor provocation triggers far more anger than usual, as lingering exercise arousal is read as part of the irritation.
You leave a horror film with your heart still going and find your date unusually appealing; the fright has faded from mind but not from the body, so it gets re-read as attraction.
Fans spilling out of a nail-biting match snap at each other in the car park queue over a small delay that would not have registered an hour earlier.
A commercial slotted right after a tense cliffhanger tests better: suspense arousal that has not yet decayed is re-read as enthusiasm for the product on screen.
After three rushed espressos, someone on a first date reads the caffeine buzz in their chest as unexpected chemistry, warming to a match they might have found unremarkable while decaffeinated.
