Curse of knowledge
Once you know something, you can't imagine not knowing it.
What it means
The curse of knowledge is the difficulty better-informed people have in setting aside their own knowledge to take the perspective of someone who knows less. The mechanism is a failure of perspective-adjustment: privileged information becomes so automatically accessible that it contaminates judgments of what others know, much as anchoring on one's own knowledge and adjusting too little. It was first demonstrated in economic settings where better-informed agents could not ignore their private information when predicting less-informed others, and the classic 'tappers and listeners' study shows how a known tune feels obviously recognizable to the one who hears it in their head. The effect is closely related to hindsight bias and the limits of theory of mind, and it is hard to switch off even when people are explicitly told to ignore what they know. In practice it quietly undermines teaching, technical writing, product design, and expert communication, because specialists systematically overestimate how clear their explanations are to novices.
How it works
The standard account is anchor-and-adjust: you start from your own knowledge and slide toward the novice's view, but stop short. A second, subtler mechanism is fluency misattribution. When a fact comes to mind easily, that ease feels like a property of the fact itself, obvious, common, foreseeable, rather than of your own familiarity with it. Birch and colleagues (2017) found the bias can appear even without the relevant knowledge: having merely glimpsed a trivia answer, so that it feels fluent, inflates estimates of how many peers would know it. The curse is therefore not only an inability to suppress what you know; part of it is mistaking a private feeling for a public fact.
What the evidence shows
Newton's tappers-and-listeners study is the vivid case: tappers expected listeners to recognize about half the tunes, but listeners identified roughly one in forty. Camerer, Loewenstein and Weber found that better-informed traders could not ignore private information when pricing assets, and that market discipline halved the bias without erasing it. Birch and Bloom extended the effect to adults reasoning about false beliefs. Yet it is not uniformly large: Ryskin and Brown-Schmidt (2014), across seven experiments, put the plausibility-driven version at under half the originally reported size and cautioned that its everyday impact may be smaller than the striking demonstrations suggest.
Where it shows up
Wherever an expert must gauge a novice's mind, the curse operates. In medicine, clinicians overestimate how well patients grasp diagnoses and instructions, because inferences that are automatic for them feel self-evident; Kapur (2024) argues this can make senior specialists, not only juniors, a source of miscommunication and error. In financial markets it distorts how informed parties price and disclose, the setting where the term was coined. It also shapes warnings and interfaces: an author who knows the system cannot feel a stranger's confusion, so error messages, consent screens and security prompts read as clear to their writers and opaque to everyone else.
Related but distinct
The curse of knowledge is the engine behind several better-known biases, which helps separate them. Hindsight bias is the curse applied to outcomes: once you know what happened, it feels as though you knew it all along. The false-consensus effect is the curse applied to preferences rather than facts. Failures on theory-of-mind tasks, in children and adults, are partly the curse making a false belief hard to hold against what you know to be true. What unites them is one slip: treating privileged information, an outcome, a preference, a fact, as if it were shared, obvious, or inevitable.
Countering it
Knowing about the curse barely dents it; people told to set their knowledge aside still cannot. Because willpower fails, the fixes are procedural. Test an explanation on real novices and watch where they stall, rather than asking yourself whether the draft seems clear. Have someone without the background edit it. List the steps you now perform automatically and write them back in. Usability testing exists largely to expose the gap an author cannot feel. The through-line is to replace your imagined novice, who is really just you with less confidence, with an actual less-informed person whose confusion you can observe.
Examples
A tapper drumming a famous song's rhythm is sure listeners will recognize it; almost none do.
An engineer writes setup instructions that skip the step they now do automatically. Every new hire stalls there, and the engineer keeps insisting the guide could not be clearer.
A parent who has driven a route a thousand times gives directions like 'turn at the usual place,' genuinely baffled that a visitor cannot picture what is obvious to them.
A doctor says the biopsy is 'benign' and moves on, not registering that the word carries no reassurance to a patient who does not know it means not cancer.
A recipe writer instructs the cook to 'fold until just combined,' certain the phrase is self-explanatory, while a first-timer overmixes because no one has shown them what that looks like.
