Competence
The need to feel effective and to master challenges.
What it means
Competence, one of self-determination theory's three basic psychological needs, is the sense of being effective in one's environment and of making progress against challenges that are well matched to one's ability. The mechanism is that experiences of mastery and visible improvement satisfy a fundamental drive toward effectance — an idea with roots in White's earlier work on the intrinsic motivation to deal competently with one's surroundings — which in turn sustains engagement and intrinsic motivation. Competence is fed by clear goals, optimal difficulty that stretches without overwhelming, and constructive, informational feedback, while it is starved by constant failure, boredom from tasks that are too easy, or feedback that is purely controlling or demeaning. A crucial nuance from SDT is that competence supports intrinsic motivation only when it is accompanied by autonomy: feeling effective at something you feel pressured into does not yield the same benefits. It is closely related to self-efficacy and to the conditions for flow, and it matters in game design, education, work, and rehabilitation, where calibrating challenge to skill keeps people motivated and improving.
What the evidence shows
The strongest experimental evidence for competence comes from studies of feedback and rewards. Deci, Koestner, and Ryan's 1999 meta-analysis of 128 experiments found that positive verbal feedback raised free-choice intrinsic motivation (about d = 0.33), while tangible, contingent rewards reliably lowered it. The catch is delivery: the same praise, framed as pressure ("you did well, as you were supposed to"), loses its lift, because it satisfies competence but strips away autonomy. Field work points the same way. Across several samples of players, Ryan, Rigby, and Przybylski found that feeling competent inside a game predicted enjoyment and short-term gains in well-being, largely independent of how skilled the person actually was at the game itself.
Competence versus self-efficacy
Competence is easy to conflate with self-efficacy, but they answer different questions. Self-efficacy, in Bandura's sense, is a belief — a task-specific expectation that you can execute what a situation demands — and it predicts whether you will attempt something and how long you persist. Competence in self-determination theory is the felt satisfaction of a need, and it predicts whether the doing itself feels energizing and worth returning to. You can hold high self-efficacy at a task you feel coerced into and still starve the need. Flow is related but narrower: it names the absorbed state that appears when challenge and skill are closely matched. Competence is the underlying need that such moments gratify, not the momentary state itself.
Where the picture gets complicated
Two findings temper the enthusiasm. First, when the three needs are entered together statistically, competence often carries the least unique weight. Van den Broeck and colleagues' meta-analysis of workplace studies found each need added independent variance, yet competence satisfaction sometimes shows weak or even negative unique effects once autonomy and relatedness are held constant — much of its influence runs through them. Second, self-determination theory treats the needs as universal, and that claim is contested across cultures, most sharply for autonomy. Support for competence is strongest in achievement and learning settings and thinner elsewhere. It is also worth separating low competence from competence frustration — the active sense of being a failure — which is a distinct, more corrosive state than simply not feeling effective.
Engineering it without backfiring
Product and program designers usually reach for competence through points, badges, streaks, and levels. These can help, but they inherit the reward trap the meta-analyses document: when the token becomes the reason to act, it crowds out the intrinsic satisfaction it was meant to mark, and taking it away can leave motivation below where it started. Informational feedback is the safer lever — feedback that says what was done and what to adjust, rather than ranking the person or dangling an incentive. The durable move is calibrated difficulty that keeps producing small, legible wins near the edge of ability. Inflated praise for trivial success does the opposite: people discount it quickly, and it can signal that little was expected of them.
Examples
A game that ramps difficulty to keep you on the edge of your ability sustains the feeling of getting better.
A beginner set on climbing routes just past her limit keeps coming back; put her on walls she can stroll up, or ones she falls off every time, and she quietly stops going.
A junior analyst told exactly what to fix improves and stays keen, while one told only 'not good enough, do it again' loses interest — the feedback controls rather than informs.
A diabetes-management app that shows blood sugar trending down after each small dietary change gives a patient visible proof of progress, turning an overwhelming regimen into a sequence of winnable steps.
