Better-than-average effect

On easy, common tasks we judge ourselves above the typical person.

What it means

A specific, well-documented form of illusory superiority in which people rate themselves as better than the average peer on traits and tasks that are common and easy. Differential weighting accounts explain it well: when judging the self against an abstract 'average other,' people focus on their own (usually adequate) absolute performance and underweight the comparison target. The effect predictably reverses to a worse-than-average belief for rare or difficult tasks, because there people doubt they clear even a low absolute bar. This dependence on task difficulty distinguishes it from a blanket ego-boost and points to a partly cognitive, not purely motivational, origin. It shapes everyday confidence, hiring self-presentation, and the calibration of forecasts.

What the evidence shows

The largest synthesis, a 2020 meta-analysis of 291 samples and more than 950,000 people, put the effect at dz = 0.78 — a moderate-to-large effect — with little sign of publication bias. That candor is unusual for a self-enhancement literature that has otherwise fared badly under scrutiny. Pre-registered replications of both founding studies also held: Alicke's 1985 trait work and Kruger's 1999 demonstration that the same egocentric process yields a below-average belief on hard tasks. The meta-analysis mapped the moderators too. The tilt runs larger for personality traits than for measurable abilities, larger for positive than for negative dimensions, and larger among European Americans than East Asians. It correlates only modestly with self-esteem and life satisfaction rather than driving them, so it is a comparison bias, not a mood.

Why it happens

Two accounts compete, and both have support. Kruger's egocentric account holds that the comparison is lopsided: people anchor on a vivid sense of their own competence and adjust too little for the equally skilled crowd they are being rated against, exactly as an anchoring-and-adjustment process predicts. A motivational layer sits on top, since the effect swells for traits people value and can plausibly claim and shrinks for negative or uncontrollable ones. The two are hard to fully separate, because the abstract 'average person' is a non-diagnostic target that invites whatever the self supplies. The strongest reason to grant cognition a real role is that motivation alone cannot explain why the same people rate themselves below average on rare, difficult skills.

Where it shows up

Because the bias tracks easy, common, self-relevant domains, it surfaces wherever people rate themselves against a faceless peer. In workplaces it inflates self-appraisals and pay expectations and can sour reactions to honest feedback, since most raters already believe they sit above the middle. In health it feeds unrealistic optimism about one's own risk relative to others. In markets and forecasting it contributes to overconfident planning. The cross-cultural pattern matters for anyone generalizing: the effect is reliably weaker, though rarely absent, in East Asian samples, especially for individualistic traits. That makes 'everyone thinks they're above average' a claim about a particular kind of task in a particular culture, not a human universal, and a poor default assumption for global products or policy.

Related but distinct

It is often merged with the Dunning-Kruger effect, but the claims differ: Dunning-Kruger concerns miscalibration that varies with actual skill, whereas the better-than-average effect is a group-level tilt in comparative judgment that need not correlate with competence at all. It also differs from plain overconfidence, which is about absolute certainty, and from optimism bias, which is about future events rather than present standing. A recurring caveat: on a symmetric trait the median and mean roughly coincide, so most people genuinely cannot be above average — but the belief is only paradoxical in aggregate. Any single person may well be above average, and the standard invoked is usually vague enough that the judgment is hard to falsify, which is part of why the effect is so durable.

Examples

Asked whether they are more or less likely than the average person to live past 80 or to ride a bike well, most say more.

Most drivers rate themselves safer than the typical driver — driving is familiar and mostly goes fine, so each person weighs their own clean record and forgets everyone else has one.

Ask a team who is above average at answering emails and most hands go up; ask who is above average at negotiating a pay rise and the room goes quiet.

Surveyed retail investors typically say they will beat the market average, an easy-feeling judgment made by dwelling on their own reasonable picks while treating 'other investors' as an abstraction they never picture concretely.

Most patients rate their own diet as healthier than that of comparable others; eating is a common, controllable activity where each person recalls their own good choices and underweights everyone else's.
