Attribution theory
The study of how people explain the causes of behavior and events.
What it means
A framework in social psychology concerned with how ordinary people, acting as intuitive scientists, infer the causes of their own and others' behavior. Heider distinguished personal (internal) from situational (external) causes; Kelley's covariation model proposed that observers use consensus, distinctiveness, and consistency information to decide which cause an effect covaries with; and Weiner organized causal explanations of success and failure along the dimensions of locus, stability, and controllability, linking them to emotion and motivation. The theory provides the scaffolding on which most attributional biases — the fundamental attribution error, self-serving bias, and ultimate attribution error — are understood. Its central insight is that behavior is governed not by events themselves but by the causes people assign to them. It anchors research on blame, achievement motivation, learned helplessness, and intergroup conflict.
Two theories wearing one name
The label covers two research programs with little to do with each other. Kelley's branch asks whether ordinary observers get causes right, and treats the mind as a rough analysis of variance: hold the person constant, vary the situation, see what the effect tracks. It is a normative model of what a rational observer should do with the information, and it was tested by handing people tidy consensus, consistency and distinctiveness summaries they would never possess in life. Weiner's branch asks a different question entirely: not whether the explanation is accurate, but what it does to the person holding it. Locus, stability and controllability matter because they predict shame, anger, pity, and whether someone tries again. Practitioners who say 'attribution theory' usually mean Weiner's.
What the evidence shows
The two branches have had very different fates. Kelley's model describes how people combine information they are handed, but they rarely seek it, and they underweight consensus: Nisbett and Borgida found that telling participants how most others had behaved barely shifted their explanations of one person's behavior. The actor-observer asymmetry — we explain ourselves by circumstance and others by character — was called robust and pervasive for thirty years. Malle's meta-analysis of 173 studies put the average effect between d = -0.016 and d = 0.095, essentially nothing, surviving only for negative events, intimates or deliberately idiosyncratic actors, and reversing for positive events. Correspondence bias itself survives, but Gilbert and Malone argue it is several distinct mechanisms sharing one label, not a single effect.
Where the person-situation split breaks down
The dichotomy at the heart of the framework may be the experimenter's rather than the explainer's. When people explain intentional action they mostly give reasons — what the actor believed and wanted — and reasons do not sort cleanly into internal and external. Coding 'she took the job because the commute was shorter' as situational throws away the interesting part: the commute is a fact about the world, but the wanting is hers. Malle argues the field should abandon three assumptions: that behavior is like any other event, that explaining it means choosing between person and situation, and that the choice runs on covariation detection. Unintentional events do fit the causal frame. Deliberate ones need a vocabulary of reasons the classic models never had.
Where it shows up
Weiner's dimensions do the practical work. Controllability drives anger and stability drives hope, so an identical event lands differently depending on the story attached: a missed shift read as 'couldn't get childcare' draws help, read as 'didn't bother' draws discipline. Attributional retraining exploits this, teaching struggling students to read a bad grade as unstable and controllable — wrong revision strategy — rather than stable and internal, with the clearest benefits among those already failing. The same lever sits under how a performance review lands. It travels imperfectly: Choi and colleagues find weaker correspondence bias in East Asian samples, not because dispositional thinking is absent there, but because visible situations get more weight.
Examples
Seeing a coworker miss a deadline, you weigh whether others also missed it (consensus), whether they miss other deadlines (consistency), and whether they miss only this kind (distinctiveness) before blaming them or the situation.
A student who reads a failed exam as 'I'm no good at maths' — internal, stable, unfixable — stops revising, while one who reads it as 'I revised the wrong chapter' opens the book again.
A friend doesn't reply for three days. Whether you feel hurt or entirely unbothered turns on nothing but whether you land on 'she's rude' or 'she's drowning at work.'
A flight delayed by weather draws shrugs; the same delay blamed on crew scheduling draws fury. Airlines word the announcement carefully because perceived controllability, not the delay itself, drives the anger.
Two voters see the same unemployment figure. One explains it by laziness and backs benefit cuts, the other by a weak local job market and backs retraining. The policy follows the causal story.
