Affect-as-information

We read our momentary feelings as data about the world or the question at hand.
What it means
The affect-as-information account proposes that people use their current feelings as a source of information when forming judgments, implicitly asking 'How do I feel about it?' and treating the answer as if it were about the target. Positive feelings signal that things are fine and license reliance on intuition and heuristics, while negative feelings signal a problem and prompt more careful, detail-oriented processing. Crucially, the informational value of a feeling collapses once people realize it stems from an irrelevant source, such as the weather. This conditional quality distinguishes it from a blunt mood-congruence effect and links it to misattribution research. It reframes mood not as mere noise but as a functional input that tunes the style and content of thought.
How it works
Feelings arrive without a label saying where they came from. A mood is simply there, and its apparent referent becomes whatever the mind is focused on when it is consulted, which is how an incidental state passes itself off as a reaction to the question at hand. The real claim is about attribution rather than valence: a feeling counts as evidence only while it seems to be about the target. Naming a plausible alternative source, the weather or a bad commute, breaks that link, and the feeling stops informing the judgment without going away. The account also reaches past mood to other subjective experiences, such as the ease with which examples come to mind.
What the evidence shows
The founding demonstration is both striking and fragile. Schwarz and Clore (1983) reported, from about fourteen respondents per condition, that people reached by telephone rated their lives roughly 1.7 points higher on a 0-10 scale on sunny than on rainy days, unless the interviewer mentioned the weather first. That gap exceeds the reported difference between people who married and people who were widowed in the previous year, which is a reason for suspicion rather than confidence. Large-scale tests have not found it. Lucas and Lawless (2013) matched daily weather to life satisfaction reports from over a million Americans and found effects near zero. Yap and colleagues (2017) ran nine well-powered tests; most returned nonsignificant results, and the surviving effects were a fraction of the originals.
Limits and caveats
The discounting half of the theory has travelled better than the claim that mood shifts global judgments. Messner and Wanke (2011) reproduced the pattern in reverse, with mood coloring judgments of the weather and the effect shrinking once attention turned to the mood itself. Schwarz and Clore (2016) reply that the original caught unusually sharp weather swings, the first sunny days of spring against a return of winter, and that the surveys buried life satisfaction behind dozens of earlier questions that brought competing inputs to mind. Simonsohn (2016) answers that the replication data were in fact less noisy, not more, and that restricting the analysis to days with large weather swings, the direct test of the extreme-days account, still produced no effect. The processing-style claim has been revised by its own authors: Huntsinger, Isbell and Clore (2014) argue that affect confers value on whatever processing style is already active, so a good mood promotes detail focus when detail focus is dominant. Direction is contextual, not fixed.
Related but distinct
The affect heuristic concerns feelings genuinely attached to the target: a technology feels dreadful, so its risks loom and its benefits shrink. Affect-as-information concerns feelings whose source lies elsewhere and get misread as being about the target, which is why it lives or dies on attribution. Mood congruence works through memory, predicting that a good mood makes good things come to mind, and it says nothing about discounting. The sharpest test between them is the move that defines this account: point at the real source of the feeling. If the effect survives, memory is doing the work; if it collapses, the feeling was being read as information.
Using it in practice
The durable lesson is about measurement order rather than dramatic mood swings. A global satisfaction question placed after emotionally loaded items inherits their residue, so ask general questions before specific ones, or accept that the answer is partly about the preceding page. For decision hygiene, the cheap intervention is naming the candidate source before the judgment, since asking whether the unease is about the file or about the morning is often enough to break the link. Treat claimed magnitudes carefully: the classic weather effect does not survive at scale, so time consequential judgments deliberately rather than expecting sunshine to move them.
Examples
Asked about life satisfaction, people report higher well-being on sunny days, unless the interviewer first mentions the weather, which strips the good mood of its apparent relevance.
In a good mood a manager skims the proposal and goes with her gut. The same document on a grim morning gets audited line by line, because the bad feeling says something is wrong here.
An interviewer stuck in traffic finds the candidate lacks spark — until he registers that he is simply in a foul mood, at which point the feeling stops seeming to be about her at all.
Asked to list ten reasons to back a strategy, a team stalls around reason seven and cools on the plan; a team asked for three sails through and endorses it. The struggle is read as evidence about the strategy until someone notes that ten reasons would be hard to find for anything.
A shopper reads a vague product claim as trustworthy in a bright, upbeat store, until she notices the piped music and the lighting and thinks that she likes this because she is standing in here. Named as the store's doing, the good feeling stops vouching for the claim.
